Cancer Care

Our mission at the St. Vincent’s UCD Cancer Centre is to provide high-quality, excellent care for individuals facing cancer. Organised on a multidisciplinary basis, our care approach brings together diverse expertise to develop the optimal care pathway for each patient. Research is seamlessly integrated into our care system, with a special focus on offering support and assistance to patients and their families.

The Cancer Centre delivers world-class services from screening and diagnosis to treatment and survivorship, addressing major cancers such as breast, lung, colon, and prostate. As the national centre for neuroendocrine tumours (NET), pancreatic cancer, and sarcoma, we are dedicated to comprehensive cancer care.

St. Vincents Private Hospital

Cancer care for public and private patients is integrated in the ST Vincent’s UCD Cancer Centre and delivered across the two hospitals on the same campus with the same standards and quality.

National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street

The Colposcopy Clinic at the National Maternity Hospital is part of the CervicalCheck network of 15 quality assured clinics located around the country for patients with abnormal smear tests.

Radiotherapy

Consultants from St. Luke’s Radiation Oncology Network are part of the each cancer area’s multidisciplinary team with radiotherapy delivered in St. Luke’s Hospital, Rathgar. St. Vincent’s Private Hospital opened its Radiotherapy Department in 1995 and has two state of the art linear accelerators.

Psycho-oncology

Psycho-oncology treats the psychological, emotional, quality of life and functional aspects of cancer from prevention to bereavement. All oncology patients may request a referral for an individual psychological assessment and therapeutic interventions during their cancer journey.

Cancer Prevention and Screening

Prevention is a cornerstone of the St. Vincent’s UCD Cancer Centre programme, hosting national screening services on-site for breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer. The National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, provides the largest colposcopy service in the country.

Smoking Prevention

Our Department of Preventative Medicine and Health Promotion offers free Stop Smoking courses, available to staff, outpatients, visitors, and the local community. These six-week courses, conducted in-person or virtually online, provide a supportive environment, help develop cessation skills, and offer advice on stop-smoking medications. 

These six week courses, are run either in-person or virtually online:

  • Provide support in a friendly atmosphere
  • Help develop skills to stop smoking
  • Provide advice on stop smoking medications

All of which increases your chances of stopping smoking for good.

National Cancer Screening Programmes

The National Cancer Screening Programmes aim to enhance population outcomes by preventing and detecting cancer early. Programmes include BreastCheck for breast cancer, CervicalCheck for cervical cancer, and BowelScreen for colorectal cancer.

Rapid Access Clinics for Breast, Prostate and Lung

The St. Vincent’s UCD Cancer Centre, in collaboration with the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), provides Rapid Access Clinics (RACs) for suspected breast, lung, and prostate cancers. Operating from designated cancer centres, these clinics offer a streamlined pathway to diagnostic evaluation and specialist review for these major cancers.

Multidisciplinary Team Meetings (MDM):

Our healthcare professionals with diverse medical expertise convene weekly or bi-weekly for Multidisciplinary Team Meetings. These sessions aim to discuss patient diagnoses and collaboratively establish personalised treatment plans based on the most suitable evidence-based protocols.

Supporting Patients during their care

Prioritising the comfort and well-being of our patients, our care team provides comprehensive support, including pain management, psychological assistance, and social support. Additional services, such as tailored physical exercise, well-being workshops, and therapeutic education, are integral to our patient-centric approach.
